Full title: At their peak, 3–5 billion passenger pigeons filled North America. Flocks were so huge they darkened the sky for hours. Some shooting contests required 30,000 dead birds to win. By 1914, the last one was gone. One of history’s most brutal population collapses.

Should we make it a rule for posts in this community to have sources?

I don’t know about this post but most posts can just come out of someone’s ass

Yeah, WTF, I was looking for a link somewhere. this is no better than Facebook slop. In some sense it’s worse, because at least on FB you know you’re getting slop.

Passage from wikipedia. Take its source value how you will:

Passenger pigeons were hunted by Native Americans, but hunting intensified after the arrival of Europeans, particularly in the 19th century. Pigeon meat was commercialized as cheap food, resulting in hunting on a massive scale for many decades. There were several other factors contributing to the decline and subsequent extinction of the species, including shrinking of the large breeding populations necessary for preservation of the species and widespread deforestation, which destroyed its habitat. A slow decline between about 1800 and 1870 was followed by a rapid decline between 1870 and 1890.[2][4] A historical plaque in Indiana states that the last confirmed wild passenger pigeon was shot in Laurel in 1902.[5] The last captive birds were divided in three groups around the turn of the 20th century, some of which were photographed alive. Martha, thought to be the last passenger pigeon, died on September 1, 1914, at the Cincinnati Zoo. The eradication of the species is a notable example of anthropogenic extinction.

Martha’s taxidermied body is still displayed at Cincinnati Zoo, along with a pretty decent display on extinct and endangered species.

There should be a rule where people should not be baselessly accusing others of being bots.
You work for reddit and trying to decontent lemmy

Lmao you get so defensive every single time you get called out for reposting shit from reddit, there’s such a thing as post and comment history my guy… At least tale enough time between posts that normie lurkers can’t immediately tell the accusations are true purely based on short term memory.

It’s obvious, but I don’t mind it. Most of this stuff is interesting. Of course I’d prefer the real OP posted here, but can’t magically make that happen. It’s weird that lemmy OP denies it though.
