I am wondering what is better for both privacy AND security, I already installed Lineage but I’m fine with switching to /e/OS.
I’ve heard Lineage isn’t good for security, but I know very little about /e/OS.
The phone is a moto g power 2021 so it doesn’t support GrapheneOS.
I can tell you that LineageOS is definitely good when it comes to security and data protection practices, but GrapheneOS is miles ahead by comparison due to its security preview releases and extensive hardening; LineageOS only applies monthly security patches once they’re released, and it makes good efforts to fix security vulnerabilities itself, like the VPN leak over QUIC, which Google refused to fix.
I don’t know much about /e/OS, but I personally wouldn’t recommend it if it doesn’t have anything you need. I don’t know of any security or data protection benefits it would offer over normal LineageOS. IodéOS, another LOS fork, does have some benefits, but it’s often far behind LineageOS when it comes to monthly security patches, which is concerning. I would therefore recommend sticking with LOS.
/e/OS has microG
LineageOS for MicroG has it too, and it works flawlessly.
Normal LineageOS has integrated MicroG support, you can install it via the official MicroG F-Droid repository.
Thanks, I’ll try this.
I’m using lineage without micro-g, so google services aren’t there, which sometimes causes issues (in-app maps, games), but I like how minimal it feels. (And it’s an exercise for me to avoid google haha)
My non-tech friend uses /e/ and it works for him as expected. I like it as a middle ground for people who just want things to work - he really doesn’t want to tinker and as his technical support I have yet to help him. That said, I’ve heard mediocre things (sorry, forgot specifics) about the company…
There is lineage with micro-g, and it’s probably good! Probably would fix my issues!
None of those are really needed, one can use plain LOS and use microG on top of it (as opposed to some years back when LOS devs opposed to it) without the need for LOS for microG neither /e/OS. However if this interests you perhaps calyxOS might interest you, which after several months came back with new releases, it’s like LOS with microG plus the ability to unlock/lock the bootloader which LOS doesn’t offer neither its devs seem interested on providing for the phone where that can be offered. Then there’s grapheneOS, using google services under a strict sandbox environment or container, however that’s not de-googling is it?
If my phone could run GrapheneOS ot CalyxOS I would use one of those, but it can’t (which I understand why) so I think I’ll install MicroG on my current LOS setup.
Copyingy my other comment here about e/os:
e/os is the worst “private” mobile OS. It is just a LineageOS with a bunch of proprietary crap. Their STT even uses OpenAI as a provider.
Also Murena founder has made some diabolical claims about exploits about how they aren’t developing their OS for “pedos”:
However, we don’t have a “hardened security” approach, we aren’t developing a phone for pedo(censored) so they can evade justice.
Just FYI, xcancel no longer works as of September of this year.

There are still some working Nitter instances, though: https://status.d420.de/
uses OpenAI as a provider
I would like a source, but if this is true, I’ll stick with lineage.

It seems like they’ve changed it after the backlash though.
Good
Unpopular opinion: security is overrated unless you do dumb things or are a high profile target
Ultimately, saying that you don’t care about privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different from saying you don’t care about freedom of speech because you have nothing to say.

I agree with that and care very much about privacy, but for me there’s a big difference between privacy and security-it’s why I’d take an out of date linux install over freshly patched windows 11-I think that in the right use case one could argue CVEs aren’t relevant so long as they’re not being exploited. Obviously though an up to date linux/graphene/whatever install is the best of both worlds.
I think a lot of these views for me were born from an anticonsumption standpoint. Some corporation decides to stop releasing software updates for a device, on their terms, and now I’m supposed to open my wallet? Nah. I used an out of date phone for 6 years and nothing bad came of it, but again it’s down to who you are and how you use it.
Old technology that is no longer securable should be taken behind a security boundary like a gateway device or recycled.
Which is why projects like Nura are so important, which works to bring mainline kernels to phones, both modern and outdated, so that they could (theoretically) be supported until the hardware itself dies.
You should be able to use a 20 year old phone with fully up to date software just like how you’re able to use a 20 year old laptop with modern software.
It’s funny that custom_username and defaultusername are in the same thread.
its the bots that everyone things that they’re seeing on social media :p
