Because I was cross posting to a bunch of other communities which were too specific. Like c/Ubuntu, c/debian, etc
Also, why not?
Because we already have several general communities and creating more of them just creates fragmentation.
A lot of them aren’t actually that active I found. I’ve even been finding that some communities don’t even seem to have a active mod
And in some of them, I found that there were people in the community who were basically just going thread to thread to find projects to call slop (ie, their only reason for commenting was to bully devs).
I found myself posting the same news to a few of them simultaneously which was also using up a lot of time. In my case, many were too specific and I felt it’s not necessarily a good thing to not be exposed to the broader community. This actually reduces a lot of cross posting in my case.
There’s no real benefit to less communities I feel either. Users can subscribe to multiple communities regardless
We could argue that pretty much every community on Lemmy has duplicates. So why bother making any?
How is creating more new ones going to solve that problem?
I ask again, how is this solving that problem?
There are at least 3 general Linux communities.
I just explained the benefits in the comment you replied to.
Sometimes there are good reasons. Often times there aren’t. The explanation that some communities are too specific doesn’t really check out, because several are not. What else ya got?
Feel free not to join it if you don’t want to
Thanks for the invitation, I might take you up on that!
