Hi everyone,

I’m the developer behind Levyra, a free and open-source music player for Android and Windows that I’ve been building independently.

I started the project because I wanted an app that could handle both streaming and local music in one place, without user accounts, telemetry, or ads. It’s grown quite a bit since the initial prototype.

Here is an overview of what the app currently covers:

  • Streaming and local files: search tracks, albums, and artists, stream online, or play your local audio collection within the same library.
  • Offline downloads: downloads songs as standard audio files with metadata and artwork included.
  • Audio and tuning: gapless playback, crossfade, source matching with automatic fallbacks, a 10-band equalizer, AutoEQ headphone correction profiles, and custom EQ preset import.
  • Synchronized lyrics: real-time lyrics with manual timing offset, line-by-line seeking, and romanization.
  • Music discovery and video: charts, new releases, recommendations, radio stations, and a toggle between audio-only and video playback with SponsorBlock support.
  • Practical tools: multiple playback queues, listening statistics, ambient and internal song recognition, and full backup/restore for your library, playlists, and settings.
  • Customization: motion artwork, customizable player interfaces, dark themes, and translations in 37 languages.
  • Platform integration: Android Auto, Bluetooth controls, lock screen playback, and system media controls.

On the technical side, the Android app is written in Kotlin with Jetpack Compose and Media3. The Windows desktop version is built with Compose Multiplatform and libVLC.

The whole project is licensed under GPL-3.0 on GitHub. There are no subscriptions, paywalls, donations, or trackers. Levyra queries external endpoints to resolve streams, but it does not host or distribute media itself.

I recently put out version 2.6.5 for Android, which updates the interface to Material 3 Expressive, expands AutoEQ compatibility, and includes several playback bug fixes.

Since I’m maintaining this solo, honest feedback and bug reports are very welcome.

Ugh another one of these slop projects that will be gone and forgotten in 2 weeks time.

The issue is if you don’t put any effort into it, why would we put any effort into trying it out? And if you don’t put any time into it, what sort of chances are there you won’t put any time in going forward?

It’s really fun to shit something out using AI, give it a fancy name, a fancy logo and a website. But then the fun wears off fast as you need to actually support, develop and improve the app. You need to actually fix the bugs and as soon as you do, you’ll quickly see the limits to what the AI can do. The whole thing quickly becomes a mess that nobody can maintain. And that’s where it’s not as fun anymore and you move on to something else.

This isn’t a critique of you personally, but a pattern we’ve seen thousands of times in the past few years since AI coding went mainstream. So many slop projects that get released and shared around on social media, only to die within weeks. We’ve learnt by now it’s a waste of time and aren’t interested.

I understand your concerns, and I know many projects get abandoned after a few weeks. But I’ve put a lot of time and effort into my app, and I keep working on it, fixing bugs, releasing updates and listening to feedback. I’m doing all of this on my own because I genuinely enjoy it, and I have no intention of stopping. I think what matters is how well an app works and whether the developer is willing to keep improving it. Time will tell. And thank you for expressing your opinion respectfully, I really appreciate that

You’re welcome to point out specific issues in the code. The project is open source, so anyone can review it. But calling the code bad without explaining what’s wrong doesn’t really help anyone. If you’ve found actual problems, feel free to share them. I’m always willing to improve my app based on constructive feedback

Problems in the code?! As if the github action bot automatically updating the readme each time the repos stars change wasn’t bad and obvious enough?

To advocate for the devil: I don’t think you need to declare that your project is AI slop. Your page long commit messages for your bundled together commits make it obvious that you have no clue about what you are actually doing and rely on AI for everything you do.

You should maybe also put your profile repo on private or clean it’s git history. Your alt account is seeping through the cracks. Which is against GitHub TOS btw.

You’ve said the code is bad several times now, but you still haven’t pointed out a single actual problem. If you’ve found something wrong, show me where and I’ll gladly look into it. Otherwise, you’re just repeating the same claim without anything to back it up. I have no problem with criticism, but it should at least be based on something concrete. I don’t think there’s much more to discuss here

I’ve pointed out the actual problem several times now. You’re advertising a slop-coded project without disclosure.

i think they might not know you equate slop with ai, and while i agree ai is a sloppy way to produce sloppy things, expecting others to know this as a face value equivalancy is a human made sloppy idea, inspired by ai.

edit: an face -> a face

Repeating that the code is bad isn’t the same as showing what’s wrong with it. I’ve already said I’m happy to look into any specific issues you find. You’re free to say whatever you want, of course, but without anything concrete to discuss, there’s no point in going back and forth. I’m ending the conversation here

You keep repeating that I said “the code is bad”. That’s not what I said. I said it’s slop-coded, which says the code is bad, and is also an explanation of why. It’s like saying “it’s a poop sandwich”. I don’t have to explicitly say that it’s bad, or explain why, that information is obvious from the title. It’s poop.

I’m really impressed with this, I just installed it after reading the “download favorites” comment here and I’m ready to uninstall at least 3 other apps that it’s replaced.

The only issue I’ve noticed so far is that it would be nice if, on the home screen widget, the album art would scale when the widget is resized. Whether the album art appears beside and then above the artist and track info when the size is increased or of the album art could be the background of the widget.

Really glad you’re enjoying my app. You’re right about the widget, the album artwork should adapt better when you resize it. I’ll work on improving that and making the layout adjust properly to different sizes. Thanks for trying my app and for the suggestion, I really appreciate it

I’ve been using Levyra for a few weeks now & it’s fantastic! Honestly, it’s everything I could want in a music streamer/player. I particularly enjoy the “download on favorite” option, it makes re-building my library quick & easy.

I’ll get back to you if I run across any bugs, but so far it’s been flawless for me.

Really, I just wanted to say “thanks” & keep up the good work!

Really glad you’re enjoying Levyra, especially the download feature. It’s nice to hear it’s been working well for you. I’m still working on improving things, so feedback like this means a lot. Also, if anyone here enjoys Levyra and hasn’t left a star on GitHub yet, I’d really appreciate it. It helps more people discover the project and means a lot to me as a solo developer :)

Isn’t there already similar apps? Anyway, I am going to stick with musicolet till I find another good alternative that have parallel queues. I think you should allow people to disable the streaming part

Of course there are similar apps, just like there are plenty of alternatives to Musicolet. That doesn’t mean people should stop developing new ones. I built my app because I wanted to create something of my own, with features I personally wanted to see. Nobody is asking you to stop using Musicolet if it works well for you. As for disabling streaming, that’s a fair suggestion and something I can consider. But streaming and local music playback are both part of what my app is meant to offer. Having more choices is a good thing, isn’t it?

I do not mean to say , you shouldn’t continue developing it and share it , just that an unique selling point could help more people switching. Multiple queues that remember positions is something unique to Musicolet and an very important features for me. I wish more apps implement it

I see what you mean now. My app already supports multiple queues, though they work a bit differently from Musicolet’s. Remembering the playback position for each queue is a good idea, and I’ll see what I can do about it. I’m not trying to convince anyone to leave an app they’re happy with, I just want to keep improving my own. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts, I appreciate it

The remembering part is the fundamental part . I have big playlists from multiple context so I switch between them, it is annoying to write in a note where I stopped

I gave it a shot when it was first released and loved the idea behind it! I was hunting for a frontend that would save files directly into the music folder at the time (to replace harmony music) and this fit the bill. I know you’ve released a few updates since its initial release so my critique may very well be outdated by now. I found the interface quite overwhelming, but still very cool to look at, it just wasn’t the most intuitive for me. Finding music was a bit confusing at times, so when I would find a song I wanted to play I just started the radio hoping it would eventually find content I was interested in. However, the radio just played songs from the same artist, then eventually play music from the main page, which would be drastically different from my tastes. The player’s need to play Taylor swift did drive me away a bit. One thing in the description that drew my interest was that the files discovered would be the highest quality possible, but when I checked my music folder, the files all averaged 48kbps. I eventually relegated the app to be my ringtone downloader due to this issue. Otherwise, your app was on course to become my main frontend. I will revisit your app soon though, I see you have sent some updates possibly addressing some of my concerns!

Thanks for sharing your experience in so much detail. A lot has changed since you first tried Levyra. I’ve reworked much of the interface, especially Home, Explore and Library, to make things easier to find and use. I’ve also improved music recommendations and autoplay, which now take your listening habits into account and try to avoid repeating the same artists and songs too often. Audio quality has improved quite a bit too, although I’d like to know if you’re still getting those 48 kbps downloads. If it happens again, just tell me which song and I’ll look into it. I’d love to hear what you think of the latest version, since Levyra has changed a lot since its early days. And if you have any other suggestions, requests or issues, feel free to share them. I’ll be happy to look into them and fix what I can

I will definitely get back to you once I revisit the app! I know after one of the early updates addressing music quality I deleted and re-favorited all my files (which took a while) to download them again and the quality hadn’t changed. But again, that was one of the early updates. I will let you know if that has changed. There’s one feature I wish more frontends would offer but haven’t yet, and that’s displaying a context menu offering options instead of just playing the song immediately when tapping. Too often I have a nice queue set up and ruin the whole thing by accidentally tapping the song instead of long pressing to play next in queue. Any thoughts on adding something like that?

Also, I wanna give kudos for making it available in the obtainium crowdsourced app configurations page from the jump, that’s how I initially discovered your app. It’s usually my first stop shop for new apps.

Levyra mainly uses YouTube and YouTube Music for streaming. It can also use JioSaavn for higher quality audio, up to 320 kbps when available. If a source isn’t available, the app automatically falls back to another one. You can also check which source is being used for each song directly in the app by opening the player menu and selecting “Technical audio info”. It shows the provider, codec, bitrate and other playback details. Levyra doesn’t host or distribute any music itself

Hey, nice looking app. I’m definitely going to give it a try. Please ignore all the doomers who have nothing nice to say. AI is here to stay, no matter how much they complain.

At this point, it’s just a trend and a contrarian opinion “oh look at me, I hate AI”. I’ve vibe coded so many personal projects, and even vibe coding is actually fucking hard work. You can’t just tell a model “build this” and it builds it. You have to work with it for hours upon hours to get things the way you want them.

AI is here to stay. It’ll never go away, and some people need to make piece with this idea and move on with their lives.

Edit: this is probably a very long shot, but it would be fantastic if you made an iOS version of this.

      Nope.

Super easy to not use it. Mad easy. Mind blowingly easy.

And the benefit is, much like art, I can feel good about the software I’m using. I can connect to the developer when I read their code and try and think of what they wanted to accomplish, line by line.

No such satisfaction with the slop-factory. Just joyless masturbation.

Thank you for the kind words and for giving my app a chance. It’s refreshing to hear from someone who understands that using AI doesn’t mean you can just press a button and have a finished app. There’s still a lot of work involved, and I’ve spent countless hours getting things the way I want them. As for iOS, it’s definitely something I’d like to explore in the future, but I’m working on everything alone, so I can’t promise anything yet. For now, I’m focusing on Android and Windows. Thanks again for the support, and I’d love to hear your thoughts once you’ve tried it
